The Florida Department of Health (DOH) is responsible for the health and safety of all citizens and visitors to the state. As a public health agency, the Florida Department of Health must monitor the health status of Floridians, diagnose, and investigate health problems, and mobilize local communities to address health-related issues. The Florida Department of Health develops policies and plans that support health goals, enforce laws and regulations that protect the health of all residents and visitors, and link people to needed health care services. The Florida Department of Health also provides specialized assistance to pregnant women, infants, and children with special health care needs, regulates health care practitioners, and provides medical disability determinations.

Senior Public Health Nutritionist - Outreach

Join an enthusiastic and collaborative team! This is a dynamic job for a dietitian passionate about community nutrition. The incumbent assists with the coordination of outreach and marketing of the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) / Nutrition program, by providing client centered nutrition education, working as a team member to meet and exceed established guidelines for the program, and providing nutrition presentations, menu reviews, referrals and services for community partners.

Your Specific Responsibilities:

• Coordinates outreach activities, health fairs and other community activities as needed to promote the WIC Program.
• Continues face to face relationships with referring medical providers and community partners.
• Provides menu consultation, food service consultation, nutrition education (individual and group), program support, and Medical Nutrition Therapy to community clients and contracted partners.
• Represents WIC / Nutrition and p articipates in meetings, workshop, conferences and training programs of professional organizations in the community as related to area of expertise.
• Certifies clients. Identifies nutrition risk based on the assessment of the nutrition questionaire, health data and health history. Provides and documents client centered nutrition education, goal(s) and provides healthcare and other referrals for services. Assigns food packages based on nutrition assessment and criteria. Provides breastfeeding education, support and referrals to ensure success assist with WIC / Nutrition breastfeeding activites. Focuses on meeting the needs of medically high risk clients following the WIC Procedure Manual, Nutrition Care Manual and the WIC Competent Professional Authority (CPA) Guidebook. Collects anthropometric data by conducting height/stature and weight measurements. Performs fingers sticks to assess hemoglobin levels of WIC participants.
• Completes and submits reports such as NEAR, EARS, travel, timesheets, assignments and reports in accordance with established agency and Division guidelines.
• Email communication must be maintained on a daily basis. Communicates with courtesy, respect, and understanding when dealing with clients, the public, and staff.
• Attends staff meetings, trainings, and any other meetings as required. Travels as required.
• At times employee may be scheduled or assigned to work in other locations within Hillsborough County; travels to clinics and performs other duties as assigned for Senior Public Health Nutritionist Supervisor (SPHNS).
• If fluent in another language, may be required to assist with translation to ensure quality client service.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Effective verbal/written communication and telephone etiquette skills.
• Knowledge of local, state, and federal WIC Program policies and procedures.
• Knowledge of current science and practice of food, nutrition and dietetics; normal nutrition principles and dietary needs throughout the life cycle.

• Ability to assess appropriate and effective feeding for women, infants and children.
• Effectively counsel using the Value Enhanced Nutrition Assessment (VENA) techniques.
• Knowledge of medical terminology.
• Nutrition charting techniques using the designated format.

• Ability to use office equipment (computer, digital scale, stature board, Hemocue machine, copier, telephone, etc).

• Computer skills: thorough knowledge, skills and ability to use Excel, Word, Outlook, FL-WiSE. 
• Excellent customer service skills, maintains client confidentiality and effective working relationships.
• Ability to lift and transfer all supplies required to perform job duties.

Qualifications:

Minimum:

• Bachelor of Science degree or master's degree in Nutritional Sciences, Community Nutrition, Clinical Nutrition, Dietetics, Public Health Nutrition or Home Economics with emphasis in Nutrition per WIC Federal Regulation, CFR, Title 7, Part 246. 
• This occupation requires that the incumbents meet the requirements outlined in Chapter 468, Part X, Florida Statutes, or be eligible to practice dietetics in accordance with Chapter 64B8-40 to 45, Florida Administrative Code.  
• Valid State of Florida License as a Dietitian/Nutritionist issued by the Division of Medical Quality Assurance 
• Valid Florida Drivers’ License is required to obtain reimbursement for travel according to policy
