The School of Humanities and Sciences (H&S) is the foundation of a liberal arts education at Stanford. The school encompasses 24 departments and 25 interdisciplinary programs. POSITION SUMMARY:

The position of the senior science writer/editor manager (editor 3) reports to the associate director of public relations/managing editor for H&S and will be responsible for covering the natural sciences--biology, chemistry, physics, applied physics, mathematics, and statistics. The senior science writer/editor manager will work closely with four additional team members, faculty and staff in H&S departments and programs, and communicators across the school and university. The successful candidate will be a strong, experienced writer as well as have some editing experience.

This position is responsible for writing content related to natural science research, including news stories, announcements, faculty profiles and tributes, initiatives related to the natural sciences, Q&As, award stories, obituaries, and press releases. They will work closely with the associate director of PR/managing editor to develop strategic messaging for the school through news and feature stories. An educational background in science and/or extensive experience writing about natural science research is critical to this position. The successful candidate needs to be able to read and understand complex academic papers, produce content from scratch (including conducting interviews), and then translate the technical language and abstract ideas into stories that are accessible and of interest to the public. They will work closely with faculty, researchers, and staff to cover their beat, including identifying research ready for publication and producing the stories, which requires both diplomatic collaboration and good judgment.

In addition to covering news, the senior science writer/editor manager will assist with media inquiries for subject matter experts, on-campus media requests for video and photography, and other administrative duties. With a strong understanding of higher education, the senior science writer/editor manager helps tell stories about the research, teaching, and learning taking place in the school for a wide range of audiences including faculty and leadership, students, alumni, donors, friends of the university, the general public, and reporters. The person must be proficient in writing promotional content and editing/repurposing existing materials for communications and development purposes.

The ideal candidate is a strong science storyteller who is also a strong project manager. They must take the initiative to solve problems and learn new tools to help them, as well as the team, be successful. The successful candidate will be a critical thinker with strong analytical skills, self-motivated, a collaborative team player, well organized, and able to follow through on commitments while managing multiple projects and deadlines.

This is a 100% FTE, continuing, exempt position. The senior science writer/editor manager will either be hybrid or fully remote depending upon the location of the finalist. If fully remote, the senior public relations manager will need to be available to travel to campus at least once per quarter.

CORE DUTIES*:

* Generate new content and edit existing content for print and digital, including H&S news stories, promotional materials, web content, feature stories, and emails.

* Manage editorial and production process that is complex in nature and reaches across organizational levels.

* Identify stories and themes and monitor editorial/publication progress.

* Ensure that information included in publications follows policies and

procedures.

* Make decisions on proposed changes and amendments to communications or publications.

* Supervise the distribution of the publications.

* Cultivate new methods to promote and disseminate information.

* Maintain high-level interactions with specialized constituents to promote departmental goals, visions, and strategies.

* Apply advanced knowledge to determine the approach necessary to achieve department objectives.

* May manage budget and negotiate contracts with vendors.

* Assist the associate director in evaluating workflow and resources and make recommendations. May supervise professional or support personnel and may conduct performance evaluations, hiring, and staff management.

* May develop and implement long-term and short-term strategic plan for a unit and across organizational line.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant work experience or combination of education and relevant experience. Master's degree preferred. Experience working in higher education preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Demonstrated ability to oversee all aspects of writing, editorial, and publication

process.

* Demonstrated advanced editorial and public relations skills and the ability to synthesize material from multiple sources.

* Demonstrated ability to determine publication and editorial approaches.

* Extensive experience managing and coordinating complex editorial and publication projects.

* Expert level knowledge of job-required tools and applications.

* Demonstrated ability to manage and allocate department resources.

* Demonstrated ability to lead and apply ingenuity and creativity in solving complex problems.

* Demonstrated ability to apply discretion and judgment in evaluating implications of information release to internal and external audiences.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Preferred:

* Skilled writer and editor, who is familiar with Chicago Manual and Associated Press styles. Knowledge of Stanford's internal styles preferred but not required.

* Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Google Drive apps.

* Experience publishing content in Drupal CMS.

* Proficient in web content strategy. Ability to write for the web and adhere to accessibility standards.

The compensation for this position will be based on the location of the successful candidate. Stanford Work Location: The expected pay range for this position is $125,000 - $147,000 per annum.

Remote Work Location: This remote role is open to candidates anywhere in the United States. Stanford University has five Regional Pay Structures . The expected pay range for this position is $104,000 to $142,000 per annum.
