This position has the opportunity for a flexible work schedule between working from the office and working from home. 

The Director of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Vanderbilt University plans, directs, and oversees all aspects of a program for adults over 50 that aims to build friendships and community through stimulating intellectual and cultural noncredit courses, programs, and trips. OLLI is funded partially through an endowment by the Bernard Osher Foundation. The director is responsible for the development, implementation, and management of the curriculum at regular intervals throughout the year including summer, fall, winter, and spring sessions. This includes pursuing Vanderbilt faculty and community leaders to teach courses. They are also responsible for the recruitment of members and for working with local community organizations to either host co-plan classes or enroll OLLI members. The director oversees an OLLI advisory board and any volunteer committees made up of OLLI members. The director works with campus partners including Faculty Affairs and Development and Alumni Relations among others. The director is a steward of the OLLI budget and funding sources.

OLLI at Vanderbilt University is a part of the Division of Government and Community Relations (GCR). GCR is responsible for the university’s advocacy work with all branches of government and for leading community initiatives and fostering and supporting community engagement. GCR works to bring Vanderbilt’s people and resources into the community in service of others. This includes supporting OLLI’s continuing education and outreach to adult members of the Nashville community, as well as Dyer Observatory’s mission to inspire public interest in science through community events, student outreach, and educational resources.

Job Responsibilities

Key Functions and Expected Performance:

  • Provide strategic planning, leadership, and vision for OLLI at Vanderbilt to achieve both annual and long-term goals.
  • Cultivate relationships and collaborate with instructors, as well as recruit new instructors, to develop curriculums that offer enriching courses and opportunities for learning.
  • Maintain and identify opportunities to grow partnerships with community organizations that align with OLLI’s mission.
  • Work with campus partners such as Development and Alumni Relations (DAR), Office of Faculty Affairs, and other Vanderbilt schools and colleges to create synergies and support and grow the OLLI program. This may include partnering with DAR to identify membership opportunities and faculty to create curriculums and instruct courses.
  • Oversees OLLI staff and administrative operations, including course registrations, classroom and event space reservations, AV set-up, transportation and parking needs, marketing and outreach campaigns, annual meeting planning, contracts and purchasing, and other logistics.
  • Manage OLLI’s financial resources and fundraising efforts, with the help of the GCR’s Director of Business Operations, Finance, and DAR, ensuring good stewardship of endowment funds and stability of the OLLI program.
  • Advance marketing and outreach campaigns to bring awareness to OLLI’s program and grow its membership, including through presentations and community engagements, brochures, newsletters, social media, and other promotional materials.
  • Fulfill responsibilities required by the Osher Foundation and Advisory Board Committee, including submission of annual reports, presentations at quarterly meetings, and serving as the OLLI at Vanderbilt’s point of contact. Will also attend and participate in the annual Osher Foundation conference.
  • Develop and update operating policies and aggregate data on key performance indicators.
  • Sustain relationships with other programs in the national Osher Lifelong Learning Institutes to promote information sharing and ensure best practices and lifelong learning trends are always known and implemented.
  • Implement use and continually assess technology platforms, including learning systems and other engagement platforms that meet the needs of OLLI staff, instructors, and participants.
  • Leverage the website, learning systems, and platforms to ensure effective communication between all OLLI stakeholders, including members, instructors, volunteers, staff, and student workers.
  • Promote and align OLLI efforts with other initiatives as identified by Vanderbilt leadership.

Supervisory Relationships:

This position reports administratively and functionally to the associate vice chancellor for strategy and operations in the division of Government and Community Relations. The Director supervises the OLLI Program Coordinator and may oversee student workers, interns, and volunteers in work relevant to OLLI at Vanderbilt.

Qualifications

Education and Certifications:

A bachelor’s degree in a related area is necessary (Education, public administration, businessadministration, nonprofit management, or related field)

Qualifications:

  • At least five years of related experience in community relations or program management is necessary.
  • A minimum of three years of supervisory experience is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills are necessary.
  • Experience in project management, event coordination, and logistics is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in higher education is preferred.
  • Superior time management skills with the ability to manage multiple, complex projects efficiently and effectively with quick turn-around is necessary.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact and maintain vibrant connections with individuals across the university and externally are necessary.
  • Superior verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to articulate and present information to various and diverse audiences are necessary.
  • The highest personal and professional integrity with a demonstrated ability to handle high-level sensitive and confidential information is necessary.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze, understand, and use data is necessary.
  • Proficiency in office software tools (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint), and other technology tools for communication (Microsoft Teams), analysis, and operation is necessary.
  • Experience with Salesforce is preferred.
  • Experience with Trello or similar project management platforms is preferred.
  • Comfortable with various technology platforms to develop electronic and print communications, presentations, and basic infographics (e.g., WordPress, Canva,LucidPress) is preferred.
  • Strong proofreading and editing skills with precise attention to detail are preferred.
  • Professional attitude and considerable tact, persuasion, and judgment when interacting with internal and external constituents is necessary.
  • Exhibit a growth mindset with a willingness to learn new skills when the situation demands it is necessary.
