Departmental Overview

UC Berkeley's University Health Services (UHS) is a comprehensive college health service providing fully accredited, primary medical care, counseling and psychological services, and innovative health promotion programs for students, faculty, and staff. UHS provides on-campus medical care and coordinates supplemental needs for off-campus care through a network of community specialists and hospitals. UHS manages the student health insurance and workers' compensation insurance programs.

Approximately 65,000 visits occur annually including Primary Care, Urgent Care, Occupational Health and Specialty Clinics. Services are designed to minimize the impact of illness, emotional distress and injury on studies and work. Coupled with health promotion and public health programs, UHS reaches all segments of the Berkeley campus community.

Responsibilities

I. DIRECT PATIENT CARE: Responsible for patient care activities in the Travel and Immunization Clinic, including immunizations, diagnostic and screening testing, nursing care, treatment and procedures. Patient care may be provided in person, by telephone, and by virtual and electronic means.

The Clinic Nurse II, utilizing the nursing process, develops, interprets, implements, evaluates and documents a plan of care for patients consistent with UHS policies, procedures and guidelines, including:

  • Provides culturally competent care and an affirmative, inclusive and respectful environment for all patients
  • Safe administration of complex vaccination regimens per standing orders
  • Adherence to strict vaccine storage, handling and documentation requirements and policies.
  • Provides case management, maintains tickler file(s) systems and collaborates with team to assure follow up and continuity of care
  • Demonstrates confidentiality, sensitivity and concern during all patient interactions.
  • Consults appropriately with supervisor and MD
  • Documents assessments, interventions, care and response clearly, legibly, accurately, concisely, and consistently in accordance with UHC policy via an electronic medical record.
  • Provides appropriate patient teaching, health education and related counseling to promote patient and community health

Areas of Specialty:
A. Mandatory Immunization and Tuberculosis Screening:

  • Review patient history, complex immunization records, conduct TB symptom screening/ skin testing, and order and evaluate blood tests to determine if mandatory immunization requirements are met
  • Evaluate tuberculosis risk assessment, patient history and testing records to determine tuberculosis clearance status and/ or additional screening, documentation or treatment requirements.

B. Immunization Program:

  • Review immunization records and identify gaps in routine recommended vaccinations
  • Educate patients on vaccine preventable diseases and ACIP recommended vaccine schedules, dosing, and potential side effects
  • Engage in shared clinical decision making with patients to reach mutual agreement on vaccination administration plan; ensuring that patients have a clear and demonstrable understanding of the risks and benefits of individual vaccinations
  • Administer vaccinations per MD/ NP orders or standing orders

C. Travel Health Consultations:

  • Assess complex travel itineraries for health, safety and security risks
  • Provide in-depth education to patients on risks and a broad range of preventative strategies
  • Conduct risk assessment to determine recommendations for travel immunizations, chemoprophylaxis and prn treatments; educate patients on risks and benefits of recommended vaccines and medications
  • Engage in shared clinical decision making with patients to reach mutual agreement on vaccination and travel medicine plan

D. Latent Tuberculosis counseling and treatment:

  • Evaluate patient history and tuberculosis screening tests to identify latent or active tuberculosis cases
  • Follow infection control plans to route potential active tuberculosis cases to care and support in management of exposures
  • Conduct health assessment and additional testing as indicated to determine health status and potential precautions for latent tuberculosis treatment
  • Provide counseling and education to patients about potential lifetime risks of active tuberculosis and risks and benefits of latent tuberculosis treatment

Required Qualifications


Licenses & Certifications

  • Valid California RN License
  • Current BLS Certification

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • 3 years of nursing experience in an outpatient clinical setting
  • Ability to work independently
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to establish patient trust over the telephone, via email/ video visit, and in person
  • Ability to obtain an adequate patient history
  • Ability to perform a complex immunization and testing record review, often requiring decoding of a range of penmanship and languages/ terminology
  • Experience in health promotion and disease prevention
  • Excellent nursing assessment skills
  • Working knowledge of insurance plans
  • Ability to work under pressure calmly, effectively and efficiently
  • Ability to document calls and drop-in visits appropriately, concisely, and clearly
  • Experience working with electronic medical records
  • Knowledge, skill, and ability to provide emergency intervention
  • Ability to anticipate patient flow and/ or scheduling problems/ conflicts and intervene effectively
  • Experience with health education and counseling
  • Experience administering immunizations
  • Ability to assess normal versus abnormal laboratory, radiology, and outside test reports and make appropriate decisions based on those results and with appropriate consultation

This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

  • The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $62.46 - $76.13.
  • This is a 80%, full-time (32 hours per week), career position that is eligible for full UC benefits.
  • This position is non-exempt and paid bi-weekly.
